The lawlessness, intimidation, and violence that erupted in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Capitol are incompatible with the fundamental principles of our democratic republic. After months of refusal to accept the election results, President Trump specifically exhorted his assembled supporters to march on the Capitol to disrupt the vote-counting process. We denounce these efforts to impede the peaceful transfer of power and undermine our nation’s democratic processes.
Many business leaders have grown to appreciate that political instability and declining trust in our democratic institutions constitute a real threat to our economic success. Continued attacks on our democratic principles undermine our position in the world and are especially dangerous at a time when authoritarianism is on the rise globally.
Our employees, customers, and communities need a well-functioning democracy in order to thrive. Bitter political divisions in the U.S. pose serious risks to our social fabric. Increasing polarization hinders the government's ability to solve complex problems that impact every American. During a pandemic and economic crisis, this political dysfunction creates even greater risk.
Our system of government is imperfect. There is much work to do to restore faith in our democracy. Businesses across the country stand ready to help overcome political divides so we can ensure election integrity, strengthen voting rights, and make our system of government more transparent and accountable. We call on every public official to honor the will of the people, respect the rule of law, and support an orderly transition for the incoming administration. Then we can work together to reduce schisms in our society and work toward a common purpose in our politics.
